Fire's Chill Pick - February 2025

Hey everyone!! If you read my article for January, you should have an idea of what this series is, and if you haven’t read it already, go ahead and give it a read because it’ll provide some context on how I’m gonna revive an old feature I had when I first started this blog. Anyways, what’s the chill pick this month?

Olivia Ridgely - Lucky

Release: March 29, 2024

Genre: Indie pop, Pop

Well, last month I covered the A-side, “Blu”, might as well tackle the B-side this month!! So, “Blu” was an incredibly warm and inviting love song that was among my absolute favorite songs of 2024, and it was dropped alongside “Lucky”, which is a bit of a different song compared to “Blu”. From what I can tell (and I tried my best, there are no official lyrics for this song that I could find lol), “Lucky” is a song where Olvia Ridgely tells off her asshole ex for cheating on her, and the repetition of “I’m so lucky” on the chorus is meant to be ironic or sarcastic. Like “I’m SO lucky” to have this cheating asshole as my partner. He TOTALLY puts no one above me”. I will admit that it took me until I was writing this review to even realize that this was supposed to be ironic; I’m not entirely sure Olivia Ridgely can sell that sort of irony here. But she makes up for that in spades thanks to the darker production complementing her delivery in a way that makes her sound exasperated and betrayed, especially in the part where she just rips into the holes in her partner’s lies. So overall, wow, I’m actually gonna rate this even higher than I was planning on rating it when I started writing this. Yeah, I’ll give this a 9/10; it’s not quite as incredible as “Blu”, but it’s still an absolutely excellent takedown. Definitely recommend this if you don’t know it!!
