The Top 10 Best Hit Songs of 2023

The Top 10 Best Hit Songs of 2023

In the following article, I look at a year for the 2020s that’s all over the place in quality and look at the outstanding highs we got from the year

Welcome back to Fire’s Flaming Hot Takes. And I’m gonna try getting this list out as fast as possible. That’s right guys, today we’re looking at the top 10 best hit songs of 2023! I mentioned in my worst list that this was the year I actually considered quitting blogging, let me start my reasoning as to why with a conversation I had with my dad at the very beginning of the year, where he was telling me to start weaning off this blog because I would start getting busier with college, and he used an example of two graduates from Stanford he hired that slacked off watching anime during work. I do get why he was telling me this, he just wanted me to be successful in life. And that is part of the reason why I attempted to take such a long break between my best list of the 2000s and now, I just wanted to see what else I should do, but you can probably tell, in that “break” I had too many ideas for articles to write and I couldn’t wait to write them, like that album review stretch. That also isn’t helped by the fact that I was reading some of my old articles and severely cringing, my worst of 2019 list was probably the worst case of this, when I at the time called it the “worst year of my life so far” And even my 2022 lists when I said the same thing about that year, it made me realize that I can’t in good conscience put an entire year into just one term of “good” or “bad” because whichever you call it as, ignores all the other stuff that happened to you that year on the other side of that binary. For example, I could refer to 2022 as the worst year of my life so far or I could refer to it as the year I got a second chance at life. I don’t know, maybe that’s just stemming from the 2023 I’ve had which had some moments I will cherish forever, but also moments I felt really sad about. Please don’t take this as me saying this year was rough for me, it was quite honestly, if anything, the opposite, and it did teach me some important life lessons as well. So with all that said, this isn’t me retiring from writing articles, at least not yet, but don’t expect them to come in such a large volume anymore.

And I know it’s pure coincidence that this happened, but that just about sums up 2023 for the Hot 100 too. The best songs this year were genuinely songs I believe defined my year in a great way, but the worst...it reached genuinely offensive territory. I feel like we get at least one year like this every decade, in the 2000s it was 2005, 2010s, 2013, and now 2020s, 2023. The charts this year were pretty defined by two main genre surges on the Hot 100 in my mind - Regional Mexican music and country music, as both genre audiences realized streaming exists and pushed in a huge surge for this genre. Country this year produced both genuinely offensive crap and some of my favorite songs of all time. Regional Mexican music...well I touched on this in my worst list, but I did find some gems there too.

Overall, there were 72 songs on the 2023 year-end list that fell into my “good tier” or higher, which somehow was even more than last year, so I am more inclined to be positive about the music this year than megative. So now it’s time to get started on this list. In the past my only rule was that the songs had to debut on the year-end Hot 100 list for the year I’m covering to qualify, but this year, I’m changing it up a little bit, as was with my worst list, the pool of songs I’m pulling from is the 2023 year-end list, but the Christmas songs are replaced by the songs just below the year-end. So, if there are 6 Christmas songs, #101-106 are eligible too. The tabulations are completely based off of @AustinRioux3’s predictions on Twitter. Additionally, if the repeat finished higher on this year-end than the previous one, it’s eligible too. But if the repeat is in the top 20 on the year-end, regardless of whether it finished higher or not compared to last year, it’s also eligible. So, if a song was #8 on 2022’s year-end and #11 on this year-end, it’s still eligible for this list. Also, like the worst list, I will be using @AustinRioux3’s 52-week predictions since apparently the people at Billboard are on crack and decided to cut the tracking period for this year off at 49 weeks. So Let’s get started by looking at my best list from 2022 and seeing what would change:

3. Taylor Swift - All Too Well (Taylor’s Version) THE ANXIETY - Meet Me At Our Spot

2. THE ANXIETY - Meet Me At Our Spot Cody Johnson - ‘Til You Can’t

1. Justin Bieber - Ghost

Ok, there are quite a few changes to address here, “Easy On Me” is still great but in a year as eventful as 2022 for me, it just didn’t have the same emotional resonance for me that other songs did, such as “Numb Little Bug”, which I remember being pretty disappointed last year that it was gonna miss my best list because more than a few lines from that song hit pretty hard for me haha. “‘Til You Can’t” also grew a personal significance I don’t think I realized it had for me in 2023. And it’s worth mentioning I think - “Ghost” progressed to a point where I just completely and utterly break down upon listening to it for a lot of reasons I’m not very comfortable with sharing at this time. "Sand In My Boots" is still great, but it has cooled on me quite a lot. "She Had Me At Heads Carolina", on the other hand really grew on me this year. Also, I should probably point out that this revised list doesn’t include my new ruleset yet.

Anyway, time to get this show on the road with our honorable mentions!!

HM #1: Toosii - Favorite Song (YE: #22, PEAK: #5)

Wait what? This is just the obvious Rod Wave ripoff, and a considerably more boring version of Wave’s music, But I don’t know what to tell you, “Favorite Song” just kept growing on me, I just really like the piano here, which yeah, might be because it’s in D Major haha. But I think it complements the song quite well, especially the content, which reflects something pretty simple, just how to treat a girl right. And then there’s the chipmunked sample, which despite being the weakest part of the song, sounds way better than it has any right to. And I know I made the comparison to Rod Wave earlier, but this actually reminds me a lot more of, and follow me on this comparison, “Lonely” by Akon, which is a good song I might add too - both have chipmunked samples that sound way better than they deserve to, even Toosii sounds a bit like Akon here for me, except instead of sounding like kicked-in-the-balls Jason Derulo, he just sounds like kicked-in-the-balls Rod Wave. Oh god, does this mean he’s gonna make his own “I Wanna Fuck You”? Let’s hope that never happens, but in the meantime, this isn’t my favorite song, but it is definitely a great, underrated little one. Check it out if you haven’t already.

HM #2: Dua Lipa - Dance The Night (YE: #32, PEAK: #6)

There were several big growers for me this year (in terms of songs missing this list, “Calm Down”, “Last Night”, “What Was I Made For?”, and “Barbie World” also spring to mind), and this was one of them. I initially pegged this as proof that nu-disco was overexposed but “Dance The Night” just kept growing on me as the fun little introduction to Barbie that it was. I should probably preface that this isn’t the best song from the soundtrack - “Speed Drive” by Charli XCX and “Pink” by Lizzo really deserved to be smash hits, but “Dance The Night” is still great. From the strings that open the song so well to let you know of the fun you’re in store for, to Dua Lipa’s confident yet fun delivery to reflect the content, which is about simply dancing the night away and not letting anything bad come in the way of you having fun. Yeah, Dua Lipa slays again, proving to be a top tier artist in nu-disco.

HM #3: Olivia Rodrigo - Vampire (YE: #29, PEAK: #1)

I’ll admit it, I was a bit more mixed on “Vampire” when I first heard it, and I wasn’t sure of how well it would hold up for me, but it just stayed with me really hard. Olivia Rodrigo has quite frankly become one of my favorite artists in the mainstream right now - but let me get my criticisms of this song out of the way first: it can tend to be overwritten in the same way Christina Perri’s “Jar Of Hearts” can feel at times, and the second half pivot from a piano to the electric guitar seems very abortive and weirdly uneven and abrupt and thus this song almost feels like a fragment. But the reason “Vampire” works at all for me is Rodrigo herself, whose vocals just sound stunning here, those high notes still give me goosebumps. She sells this like she was truly hurt by this guy preying on her because she was younger and girls his age know better. Yes, it’s a messy song composition-wise, but I feel like that was part of the point. It’s not my favorite from GUTS - we’ll get back to that later, but this is still a great song.

HM #4: Beyonce - CUFF IT (YE: #33, PEAK: #6)

Honestly, outside of maybe “BREAK MY SOUL”, this is my favorite song on Renaissance, an album I tastelessly branded as mid last year, but I can confirm that it is actually great now. It’s a loose, playful disco-esque jam where the content is very simple; you’re having sex with Beyonce. And Bey sounds like she’s genuinely excited to have sex with you and makes the whole song super enjoyable. Great track!

HM #5: Taylor Swift - Lavender Haze (YE: #34, PEAK: #2)

When I went to The Eras tour this summer, the way the bass boomed out of the speakers in the stadium was utterly incredible. It wasn’t my favorite moment of the tour - that would go to 10 minute “All Too Well” - but it was definitely what I felt helped me still really like this song even after all the overplay! Taylor Swift balances being seductive with the incredibly tense atmosphere so well. Great song, but not my favorite from Midnights - we’ll get to that later.

HM #6: Lil Uzi Vert - Just Wanna Rock (YE: #30, PEAK: #10)

Now, if it weren’t for the fact that this was so short, I would’ve handedly put this on the list proper. But as is, the short length makes this feel like the free trial version or even the movie trailer version of Jersey Club. Don’t get me wrong, this is still a great trailer, with the synths and the kick building some genuine swell. And Lil Uzi Vert’s “buh buh buh” ramps up the energy so much. But it does feel like it was missing a chorus to have that “buh buh buh” bit properly pay off. As is, if this is the trailer to Jersey Club being a massive force in mainstream music in the 2020s, I’ll gladly welcome it. However, I still wouldn’t call this the best Jersey Club hit of the year, we’ll get to that...next actually!

HM #7: Bad Bunny - Where She Goes (YE: #74, PEAK: #8)

Handedly my favorite song on Nadie sabe lo que va a pasar mañana, “Where She Goes” was the Jersey Club banger that “Just Wanna Rock” almost was but fell just shy of hitting. From the tense atmosphere to the percussion that feels more clean yet still powerful, this may actually be my favorite Bad Bunny song. Great stuff!!

HM EX #1: Benson Boone - In The Stars (YE: N/A, PEAK: #82)

Not a hit, or even from this year at all, but I just have to highlight this because this resonated so much in multiple ways. I used to hate Benson Boone, from the first song I heard from him, “Ghost Town” (which I still find absolute crap), but when I first heard “In The Stars” in the late spring of 2022, I liked it but didn’t think it was particularly great. I relistened to it on a whim in 2023, and it utterly wrecked me, One thing I discovered about myself this year is that I live in constant fear of losing my loved ones (I’ve had nightmares about that on many occasions), which  probably explains why I always used to have a soft spot for songs in that territory like “Even Though I’m Leaving” by Luke Combs, but even without the loss factor, I still found myself resonating with the sentiment of losing something and longing for it back even if there’s a chance it may never do so. And that really hit me home in moments when I was longing for my pre-stroke life, and doing the stuff I used to love doing, like going for a bike ride or...one other thing I’ll get back to later on this list. But then in the summer, my grandma got pneumonia and after fighting so hard (won’t get into all the details), she passed away. This was the last song I ever sang to her and almost every line hit me so hard, arguably the hardest hitting lyric for me was “Sunday mornings were your favorite”, because I associate it with a rather embarrassing phase of my life that lasted many years, where I’d wake up every Sunday morning at 7:45 AM to listen to Sunday’s AT40 Hot AC show. I quit doing that this year, yes, part of it was me finally growing out of that phase of my life, but I feel like my grandma’s passing played a part in that as well, as she absolutely loved hearing me sing, she would constantly tell everyone she met that I had a beautiful singing voice. She was the most unbelievably positive person I’ve ever met. Even despite struggling so much this year, she always was happy and bubbly as ever, you could be the Disney villain and she’d still find something nice to say about you, she treated everyone she met as her own kid. When this song got a pop radio resurgence earlier this year, I was genuinely ecstatic, it was a shame it wasn’t really able to do much beyond that, but it’s at least a way I feel like I have a connection with my grandma every time I hear it. RIP Ajji, I love and miss you more than anyone can imagine, you raised not only a family but an entire village ❤️❤️.

HM EX #2: Sia - Unstoppable (YE: #143, PEAK: #28)

So I mentioned in my non-US hits article for 2022 that this still had a shot of making the 2023 YE so I’d avoid talking about it in too much detail in that article. But it missed my eligibility pool, so here’s my actual in-depth review of the song: This song, more than any other this year, served as an anthem for me. So I was in my rehab clinic one day and during physical therapy, I was breaking down crying thinking I would never be able to recover or even walk well again. But the therapist working me that day knew I loved music, so he asked me to tell him a song that empowered me, so struggling to get it out, I said “‘Unstoppable’ by Sia?” And from that moment on, this became the anthem I belted out either literally or in my head to give me a boost in self-confidence, and every time I did, I accomplished my goal or task. I know it’s easy to dismiss this as just another generic self-empowerment anthem from the mid-2010s (because let’s face it: it is) made worse by the fact that Sia sung this and that it regained popularity in the wake of her Music movie backlash, but this was an anthem for me that probably defined my year for the better.

HM EX #3: Nightbirde - It’s OK - Live (YE: N/A, PEAK: N/A)

Prior to this year, I had no clue that Nightbirde was, but one day out of the blue, my dad showed me her America’s Got Talent audition, and it hit me very hard, she wrote this song was what she wrote one night after she was diagnosed with cancer, it did something incredibly rare for me - I gave it an instant 11/10 on first listen, which is usually extremely unlikely, if not impossible. This was even further poignant when I found out she couldn’t perform in the AGT finals because of her cancer, she sadly passed away back in 2022. And her positivity despite her enormous adversity was incredibly inspiring to me. I should probably mention I do find the live version better than the official one, though that one is also transcendent. She also said this after her audition: "You can't wait until life isn’t hard anymore, before you decide to be happy", this resonated with me for a multitude of reasons that you could probably imagine if you know what I went through last year. RIP Nightbirde, you were an inspiration to me, and I hope you’re not suffering anymore.

Well, that was a lot of heavy moments right there, so now for the list proper!

10...You know, it’s pretty notable how well non-English music did on the Hot 100 this year. We had regional Mexican music, Afrobeats, and even this K-pop bop!!...

10. Fifty Fifty - Cupid (YE: #47, PEAK: #17)

There is so rarely a hit song I would genuinely call adorable nowadays, but we got this! And yeah, “Cupid” is just really cute in every way, from the nu-disco production to the great vocals from all the girls here and then the content, which is about being frustrated with falling in love again, it may as well be “Love Again” by Dua Lipa without the strings! And that is a compliment, given that “Love Again” is also great. Great, summery bop, and yeah, Cupid (the god) is overrated anyway.

9...Flaming hot take incoming...

9. David Guetta & Bebe Rexha - I’m Good (Blue) (YE: #10, PEAK: #4)

I completely get every criticism thrown at this song, it’s a blatant sample of the original “Blue (Da Ba Dee)” with more unoriginal lyrics and it may as well be the poster child for when it comes to bad sampling in 2023. But fuck it, I really like, borderline love “I’m Good (Blue)”. It may sound dated to 2017 - but given I love this year in music, I don’t really mind. And as for how lazy the song is, well I’ll gladly take this over David Guetta’s misleading cover “Baby Don’t Hurt Me” which was a cover of “What Is Love” by Haddaway disguising itself as an original song by changing the title. Yes, the lyrics of this song aren’t that strong, but really, they are just brainless and fun enough to have fun to. Plus, I never hated Bebe Rexha as a singer, she’s technically not the strongest singer but she’s just competent enough to make this work. So yeah, objectively the laziest trash ever, but to me this was a lot of fun, and yeah, I really like this and am still gonna defend it.

8...If you want the artist who had the biggest turnaround in quality this year, I don’t think you could find a bigger example of this than Post Malone...

8. Post Malone - Chemical (YE: #60, PEAK: #13)

Yeah, even as someone who liked Posty’s hits last year way more than most, even I can recognize that “One Right Now” and “I Like You (A Happier Song)” were downgrades from stuff like “Goodbyes” or “Sunflower” or even “Wow.”. But “Chemical” just kept growing on me over the year as a pop-rock bop, especially when the piano shows up, it just sounds glorious, the guitars are also really tight and give this a great groove and even Posty spending the entire song in his upper register doesn’t bother me too much! And yeah, it may be the return of D Major here, but still, this is an excellent track. Might just be one of Post Malone’s best.

7...So, on my worst list, because of my rule change, two songs made my worst list for the second year in a row. Let's examine how this rule change positively affects my lists now shall we?...

7. Harry Styles - As It Was (YE: #16, PEAK: #1)

Granted, maybe I should amend my rules next year because this doesn’t at all feel like a 2023 hit haha. That said, “As It Was” is an excellent song that never burned on me courtesy of the tight guitars and percussion work and Harry Styles just working perfectly on this song, especially his belting. And the way the song introduces the bell crescendos near the end of the song just rules. Yeah, excellent in 2022 and still excellent one year later.

6..“I Remember Everything” is missing this list. I know, kinda shocking if you know me, considering I consider Kacey Musgraves my favorite artist of all time, and I am very thrilled to see her finally get success, but I’ll just say it: “I Remember Everything” is great and it was one of the last cuts from this list, but it’s just not one of her stronger songs. That said, if you want my second favorite artist of all time and the one that defined my year basically, it’s her second appearance on this list (and it won’t be her last!)...

6. Taylor Swift - Anti-Hero (YE: #4, PEAK: #1)

I fully get why one may call this one of Taylor Swift’s worst songs, the “sexy baby” lyric is definitely clunky and even if it was meant to be clunky to come off as more human from Swift, it feels very contrived to the point where it doesn’t come off that way. But “Anti-Hero” almost to a T matched how I felt about myself at times throughout the year, like an anti-hero that doesn’t deserve anything and someone who was extremely exhausting to root for. Yes, I’m sure this is a feeling that’s very universal, and I bet everyone has felt like this at least a little at some point in their lives. But to me, this song encapsulates why universal songs appeal to people - they repeat our thoughts back to us and it’s like someone gets you or like you vented everything out to your best friend or loved one. Helps that Taylor sells this with a heartbreaking sincerity that makes you feel really bad for her, including how she feels so low of herself that she feels like given the opportunity to do so, her own family would betray her because she’s that much of an anti-hero. And her delivery on the bridge reflects a resigned sadness like she’s accepted it even though she hates it. Yes, maybe Taylor should take steps to better herself if she truly feels the way she does in this song, but fuck it, sometimes when you’re in your feelings, you just don’t want to better yourself, you just want to whine “everybody hates me” and get sympathy, basically, what I’m saying is this song is weirdly, in a way, emo. This song was one of four songs on this list that at one point topped this list (including what ended up being my #1), so what five songs were better than this? And sue me, It’s me, hi, I’m Fire’s Flaming Hot Takes, the problem, it’s me.

5..So back with “Cupid”, I mentioned how we so rarely get adorable songs anymore, but here we are, with the second adorable song to make this list, and it’s from someone who made my worst list...

5. Kane Brown & Katelyn Brown - Thank God (YE: #24, PEAK: #13)

I know, this is a generic boyfriend country song at its core, but I’m sorry, I just find this so cute. Kane and Katelyn Brown have great chemistry with each other and sound so genuinely lovestruck and in love with each other. But also the production, while kinda synthetic, delivers a great sounding melody courtesy of guitars. Yeah, this is genuinely really sweet, and it does make me feel extraordinarily single haha. Love this.

4..If you saw one of my album reviews this year, this shouldn’t be a surprise, “So is this better or worse than JVKE’s excellent song from this year?”, this was also one of the four songs that topped this list at some point over the year...

4. JVKE - golden hour (YE: #44, PEAK: #10)

Let me start by saying that this isn’t as good as Kacey Musgraves’s album or song of the same name. But “golden hour”, the JVKE song, is still such a pretty song, and it’s quite a glowup considering my first exposure to him was a feature on a Jax song that literally sampled the Barney theme. JVKE sounds so incredible here when he’s singing and his cathartic “SHIIIIIIIIIIIINE” shines (pun kinda intended) bright enough for me to overlook the admittedly clunky rap verses. Even the outro, with all the strings, sounds so gorgeous. Yeah, this song is excellent,  but what 3 songs topped this?

3...So I’ll be the first to admit that I didn’t totally love “brutal” by Olivia Rodrigo in 2021. It was still good, but I never really considered it my favorite song on SOUR. I bring this up because my #3 pick is basically “brutal” again but somehow even better?...

3. Olivia Rodrigo - bad idea right? (YE: #88, PEAK: #7)

Yeah, I think my initial problem with “brutal” that didn’t allow it to fully click for me was that “brutal” felt like an angsty teenage temper tantrum that didn’t really have any self-awareness or justification for being that way. “Bad idea right?” though is by far my favorite song on GUTS, and takes the problems I had with “brutal” and completely corrects them. For one, Olivia is showing some self awareness that hooking up with her ex in response to her hormones is probably a bad idea. And that self-awareness is really all the justification I need. Also “the biggest lie I ever said” is my favorite 2 seconds of 2023 though “I should probably probably not” comes in as a close second. I think honestly, including this song was the primary reason I chose my pool of songs to be the 52-week year-end, in addition to it being more representative of the year in my mind haha.

2...This was the third of four songs that were #1 on this list at some point and I’d argue that this was the biggest frontrunner for a long time...

2. Taylor Swift - Cruel Summer (YE: #14, PEAK: #1)

My favorite song on 2019’s Lover, and I’m utterly thrilled it got a resurgence. But admittedly, it was the Eras tour that caused me to recognize this as one of Taylor Swift’s best songs, the percussion booming out of the stadium speakers was one of the highlights of the year for me, and every single time this summer when my dad and I were driving down an empty freeway, I turned this song up to the absolute max volume and I started joyously shouting the bridge. The synths sound outright heavenly and build some legitimate swell into that bridge which is one of the most exhilarating aspects of music in the 21st century at least - not taking that back. Yeah, this song is utterly fantastic. I’ve loved this song since I first heard it in 2020, and I only have grown to adore this song overtime, So, the artist that defined my 2023 has one of her best songs resurge and become a hit this year and yet it still wasn’t my #1, so what was?

1...Yeah, this #1 pick may be the most surprising it’s been since...well, my best list for 2000, but screw it when the song has developed a humongous personal connection with me that even tops one of Taylor Swift’s best songs, I just couldn’t give it to anything else...

1. Luke Combs - Fast Car (YE: #8, PEAK: #2)

Before I heard this cover, Tracy Chapman’s original was a song I found good, but not quite great. But this year, a very special connection formed between me and this song. So something I didn’t mention last year was that my AVM rupture took away my singing voice, not directly (or at least I don’t think directly), but because I had that rupture, I was put on a ventilator while I was in a coma, The ventilator, while it saved my life, also damaged my vocal cords, and I bet y’all are thinking “Oh boo hoo, you ungrateful brat, you lose your singing voice in exchange of having your life back”, but just hear me out; imagine one day just having something that was incredibly therapeutic to you and your favorite part about yourself, just taken away from you, and you don’t even know what happened or why it happened, that’s what losing my singing voice felt like to me, and as a result, I stopped singing for several months because I utterly detested how I sounded (fun fact: the term I attempted to coin earlier this year, DCG Syndrome, was literally derived from how I felt about my singing at the time) and even stopped listening to a lot of music. And this also tied back to my feeling of quitting blogging that I mentioned at the start of this article. But then one day, I just randomly got very hooked on “Fast Car”, both this cover and the original, and started singing this, and I genuinely loved singing it, regardless of whether I sounded like a dying dolphin or not. For that reason, I call “Fast Car”, both Luke Combs’s cover and Tracy Chapman’s original, the song that helped me find myself again. It also probably helps that Luke Combs’s cover, even without all my personal significance, is just incredible; I actually think the melody here is even better than the original, no, the song itself is not better than Chapman’s original, admittedly Combs singing from the perspective of a checkout girl can at points feel a little clunky, but that perspective is what made the original song so great, in the original, you could tell that Tracy Chapman is this girl who must break the cycle of poverty and addiction her father and neglectful partner are going through by making the difficult decision to cut off those relationships, but I can easily overlook that when Luke Combs sings this as well as he does here, you can clearly tell that he loves the original song so much here (it’s the reason I don’t hate Ritt Momney’s “Put Your Records On” cover as much now in hindsight.). But yeah, “Fast Car” by Luke Combs, the best hit song of 2023, and this marks the second year in a row where the 8th biggest song of the year was also my favorite hit of the year haha. So I guess, with that, am I gonna quit blogging? Well, I’ll say this: this is not me quitting or even taking a break from blogging, I do have a few ideas for articles I wanna do in 2024. But don’t expect me to continue pumping out lists at the same frequency that I used to since I’ll be busy. I do have a few article ideas I plan on getting to in 2024 so stay tuned for those!!

But that’s the list! Thank you all for reading, follow me on Instagram with the link below this article and the Spotify playlist with all the songs I mentioned as always will be below the article if you want to hear any or all of the songs listed here, but until then, this has been Fire’s Flaming Hot Takes, and I’ll see you next time!!

    HM #10. Chemical: Post Malone

  2. Since this was such an odd year for music and I didn’t necessarily like a good chunk of the country stuff that came out, the pickings here are a bit more slim than usual. I also feel I branched off a bit more this year where I didn’t necessarily pay attention to as much of the music, so there are some songs here that I hadn’t heard until yesterday when submitting for the Billboard Hot 100 Rankdown. I already had made my own top 100 list for the year, so this list was pretty easy to make as it was just cross-referencing what made my top 100 with Billboard’s list.

A couple other random thoughts I had based on reading your article before getting into my list. I actually have a very similar opinion to “I Remember Everything.” Kacey’s vocals are beautiful here, but idk…this is a really hot take but I don’t really get what people see in Zach Bryan? He’s fine I guess, but his style doesn’t really resonate with me and his parts in this just seem kinda generic.

Also, I am so sorry to hear about your grandma passing away! I guarantee you literally nobody is thinking you’re an “ungrateful brat” after the horrible things it sounds like you’ve been through these past two years. <3

HM 7 Nicki Minaj & Ice Spice - Barbie World
I literally just saw Barbie this past Saturday after hearing so many people tell me I was missing out, and after having seen it, I can honestly say holy shit, I truly was missing out lol. The film was amazing, but even without the context of the film, I don’t think I’ve liked a song this much from Nicki in years. The sample works really well for me here and Nicki and Ice’s chemistry here makes this really fun!

HM 6 Doja Cat - Paint the Town Red
This may have been a bit higher, except I’m getting a tad burnt out on it tbh due to excessive radio overplay. Regardless, this is one of my favorites from her, up there with “You Right” and “Like That.” The sample is what makes this work so well for me - it feels very light and airy, and in the age of constant sampling, this is an example of how to incorporate it really well. “Agora Hills” has quickly surpassed this as my favorite from Scarlet. I love how different “Agora Hills” is for her, and tbh, her flirty Valley Girl personality in the song is kinda hot lol.

HM 5 Fifty Fifty - Cupid
Contrary to what you might think given the featured artist for the remix, I actually like the solo version of this better. It’s another song on this list that I feel is pretty damn close to pop perfection (although not as much as “Boy’s a Liar”), as I also have a huge soft spot for adorable bubblegum pop songs like this, and wish we had more of them. Even though the lyrics are very simple and generic, it’s a bop! It’s kinda sad these girls will probably never make music again given all the legal issues they got themselves into with this song. Also, it didn’t make my list, but I completely share your thoughts on “Thank God” being adorable even if it is a generic boyfriend country song (and this is coming from someone who usually doesn’t like a lot of country).

  3. HM 4 Raye & 070 Shake - Escapism
I honestly didn’t think this was going to be a hit when I first heard it, but I’m glad it was! (It’s a bummer nothing else off the album did anything, though). The manic production matches the vibe of Raye’s vocals so well! What I love most about this song, though, is how self-referential and smart the lyrics are, where she’s essentially narrating how she feels to the listener.

HM 3 Coi Leray - Players
While Coi Leray may not be one of the best rappers, I do really like this song. The production feels a bit reminiscent of Latto’s “Big Energy,” which is one of my favorite songs from last year. Idk, I don’t really have a lot to say about this one, it’s just a fun bop and I appreciate it for what it is.

HM 2 Doechii - What It Is
Despite it interpolating the creepy “Some Cut,” I really like this. However, despite that it appears the Kodak version is the one that charted, I’m ranking it as if it were the original. Kodak’s version is definitely inferior, both because his verse feels very tacked on and he repulses me as a person in general. I’m not even sure why some stations are still playing the Kodak version, as they have to censor half of it anyway whereas they wouldn’t have to censor any of the solo version…but I digress. Anyway, Doechii sounds really good here and I like the sample of “No Scrubs” (which I didn’t even realize was even there until listening to the song several times lol).

HM 1 Metro Boomin featuring The Weeknd and 21 Savage - Creepin’
This was a bit of a slow grower for me, as I didn’t like how bare-bones the production was at first, but it’s really grown on me. The production is the star of the song for me - I really like how atmospheric and mysterious it is to represent The Weeknd’s uncertainty about if his lover is being faithful to him. The Weeknd’s vocals sound great here as well, and 21 Savage’s verse fits really well here without falling into the trap of feeling like a rent-a-rapper verse that it could have been, considering it’s essentially a cover. It’s worth noting I wasn’t as familiar with the original though, so not having that bias of what Mario Winans’ version sounded like may have influenced me to enjoy this more than I otherwise would have.

HM EX 1 Neighbourhood - Sweater Weather
I’ll do an extra as well. I was familiar with the song way before this year, but it reached god tier status for me within the past year. My CHR had put this in power rotation the entire winter last year, which I thought was kinda cool since it wasn’t a hit. They’ve continued to give this about 40 plays per week, even all through the summer, I swear they’ve played it as much as “Flowers” and the other biggest hits of the year. Hearing it all the time was the catalyst for me falling in love with the song, and I’ve not gotten sick of it despite hearing this probably hundreds of times this year. Besides just being a damn good song, I also happened to fall in love with the song the week before I moved out-of-state away from my family. I guess it’s kinda cheesy, but this song is so sweet that it was comforting to me in a time where I was scared, so I think some of my love for it comes from my mind associating it with that situation. But yeah, this feels like the defining song of the year for me, no question.

  4. 10. Olivia Rodrigo - Vampire
This is another song I honestly didn’t love when it was first released, but it really grew on me. The piano instrumental feels very autumn-ish to me, which I like, although honestly it was that build-up to the chorus that made this grow on me so much. Now, I actually like this better than some of the ballads on Sour like “Deja Vu” and “Traitor” - something about the slow build-up into the explosive-feeling chorus really works for me.

    9. Toosii - Favorite Song
I’m so glad I’m not the only one who likes this song! Weirdly, I can kinda get why people find this boring, but I really like the lyrics and the autotune is so extreme here that it’s funny-bad in a way that’s ever-so-slightly endearing, if that makes sense lol.

    8. Taylor Swift - Lavender Haze
This was an instant favorite off of Midnights for me. The sensual, ominous production here makes the whole song feel very hazy (pun intended lol). Taylor carries that dreamy vibe excellently here with her mysterious vocals. “Anti-Hero” is still my fave by just a hair, but this is definitely my second fave off of Midnights.

    7. Jvke - Golden Hour
I have really gotten into Jvke’s music this past year, although my first exposure to him was his short-lived pop radio single “This Is What Falling in Love Feels Like.” Ironically, the first time I heard this song I was neutral on it, but after a few more listens, I fell in love with it. It’s such a cute, romantic song, and I really like Jvke’s production work here. In general, I love how well Jvke does in capturing raw emotion in his songs. This song feels like such a perfect representation of the feeling of being smitten with someone, and I’m glad it became a huge hit for him.

    6. Lady Gaga - Bloody Mary
I’m so shocked this became a hit, but I’m really happy we got to see so many great songs come back around this year. This song makes me really nostalgic for the Born This Way sound, as I was in middle school when this first came out and this song just generally reminds me a lot of the good memories from that time. I really like the dynamic production here, and this is arguably one of Gaga’s best vocal performances from that album.

(“Bad Habit” would be between these two if it were eligible)

  5. 5. Taylor Swift - Anti-Hero
It’s so crazy this got such a high position on this year’s chart, but it’s definitely deserved! I feel a little bad placing it this low because I do really love it, but it’s burned on me just a tad from feeling so inescapable. I like your theory about Taylor having her emo moment with this song, and totally agree with what you said about how this song is kind of empowering, because sometimes you just need to be pouty and sad lol. In a way, this song’s universal appeal is kind of comforting in the sense that it means a lot of people struggle with self-esteem, which at least for me, can make me feel less alone in days where I’m feeling like I’m the problem, or I’m the only one who struggles with self-confidence. I also definitely relate to the song’s main message as well of feeling like the problem, albeit not quite as much lately as I’ve been struggling more with anxiety than self-confidence recently, but there have definitely been times where this has hit really hard.

    4. Miguel - Sure Thing
I never would have expected this to come back around after all these years, but I’m so glad it did! It’s such a bop and Miguel’s smooth, sensual vocals fit so well with the production here. I’m really happy this ended up being one of the biggest hits of the year.

    3. Pinkpantheress f/Ice Spice - Boy’s a Liar Part 2
I had heard Pinkpantheress before in Madnesses on Pulse, but I’d never really explored her discography in-depth. This is such pop perfection and both artists have amazing chemistry with each other that I like it better than the original. I love how light and carefree the beat is, like you’re floating on a cloud. This also avoids the trap of sounding like the featured artist was just tacked on for the remix - in fact, I think I like the remix better than the original!

    2. Harry Styles - As It Was
I’ll follow your rule about repeats being eligible if it made top 20 last year. Even though I tend to get sick of songs if they’re overplayed too excessively, this is one I’ve never gotten sick of. Harry sounds so good here, and I like how ominous-yet-peaceful the production sounds. I would consider this as more of a 2022 song and it isn’t eligible for my personal list, but if we’re counting repeats that made the top 20, this is still a fave for me :)

Olivia Rodrigo - Bad Idea Right?
This was an instant favorite for me. I love Olivia’s bratty energy here so much! It feels like the perfect balance of sass and confidence and the song is just so much fun. It’s a shame her team fumbled with this a bit on pop radio, where it was kinda unclear whether their focus was this or “Get Him Back!” but I’m glad it at least got close to top 10. It’s also a bummer “Get Him Back!” didn’t make this list either, as I like it just as much as this one. I hope she continues with that sound in her next album, because it’s exactly what I want to hear from her. This song made the top 5 of my personal top 100, and is the only song in my personal top 15 that made it on the year-end list.
