Benson Boone - Sorry I’m Here For Someone Else
Release: February 27, 2025
Genre: Pop Rock, Big Music, New Wave
You all know Benson Boone, right? The guy who made one of the worst ever noises to be heard in a top 5 hit last year with his big hit “Beautiful Things”? Yeah, that song is still absolutely terrible, but thankfully we’re not covering that song today. Instead we’re covering “Sorry I’m Here For Someone Else”, which appears to be the lead single for a potential new album from Benson. Right out the gate, this is already so much better than “Beautiful Things” on composition alone; Benson stays firmly in his vocal comfort zone and he only belts at key moments and proves that he’s actually a pretty good singer when he doesn’t start screeching like a drunk bat. I also really love the tighter guitar work and the rock groove that reminds me a lot of something that maybe Bleachers would make, leading to an impressive closing crescendo at the end of the song. I also think the lyrics paint a very engaging narrative. I think the best comparison lyrically might be, sue me for this but, “Bizarre Love Triangle” by New Order. The song follows the narrator as he waits for his partner at a diner, only to spot his ex working there. Immediately, the feelings rekindle and when the narrator’s girlfriend finally shows up, the narrator and the ex get back together as they realize that they were meant for each other. This is where my comparison to “Bizarre Love Triangle” comes in: both songs show the narrator encountering another girl and ultimately falling for that girl while still with their current partner. I think what really helps this song is that Benson doesn’t really wallow in what could’ve potentially been a douchey sentiment and there’s a clear moral struggle that Benson is dealing with here, and he is at least self-aware enough to know that he’ll be hurting one of the girls regardless of what choice he makes. The “Benny don’t do it” line shows that Benson is clearly trying to resist the urge of hooking back up with his ex. It also probably helps that he mentions that he and his current girlfriend are “far from perfect for each other”. Again, the song doesn’t wallow in the douchiness of the sentiment and you don’t wind up feeling that bad for the new girl here (okay, maybe you do if you closely listen to the lyrics lol) because the song rides its highly energetic groove to make the narrative compelling, it’s not nearly as douchey as “Cry” was. In other words, this is easily one of Benson Boone’s best songs, and I give it a pretty strong 9/10. This is literally charting on the Hot 100 right now, please don’t fumble this, make this a hit!! If you can make “Beautiful Things” one of the biggest songs of 2024, surely you can make this a big hit too, right?
