The Top 10 Best Hit Songs of 2011 REDUX

The Top 10 Best Hit Songs of 2011 REDUX

Welp guess who’s back with another list redux? We’re looking today at the best hits of 2011!!

So as I said in my worst list redux, revisiting 2011, the year has aged pretty interestingly. It’s still absolutely one of the best years of the 2010s for pop music, where I found new appreciation for songs I may have liked but not loved and even songs I outright disliked before aging remarkably well! That said, the opposite was also true, you saw quite a lot of examples of songs I liked before appearing on my worst list this time haha.

As I said in my original lists, 2011 is very much in the same vein as 2010 and 2012 with songs purely about partying. The club boom had just hit its apex in 2011, with many of the biggest hits this year being flashy, nightclub ready bangers. This was definitely the point it started hitting oversaturation levels though, as the year following it saw its significant decline, later completely dying out in 2013. That said, this year was flooded with club bangers - from pop to hip hop as well. And I guess country was a bit split in this regard, the early seeds of bro-country were planted this year and the non-bro-country country songs were very sedate and bland; you know, perfect Macy’s or Target music. And a weird sense of nostalgia manages to overpower the fact that some of these songs are quite dated admittedly. And I say “weird” because I was far too young to have many concrete memories of 2011’s music, so I suppose I wouldn’t call it so much nostalgia more than a strange sense of longing for a happier time.

It was also a year where pop stars like Katy Perry, Kesha, Lady Gaga, and Rihanna were duking it out to see who’s the main pop girl. And this all adds up to a pretty chaotic, but overall great, year for the charts; even though if I were to make an overgeneralizing statement on the pop music trends of 2011, it’d just be club boom, club boom, and more electropop era (whatever term you use to describe the sound lol), to the point where I could make a top 30 of this list and still fill out a full 10-song honorable mentions list and have plenty of material to cut.

Now enough rambling, it’s time to start the list. In my previous list reduxes, I tried a rule that stated if a top 20 repeat was lower than it was last year on the Hot 100 year-end, it can only be eligible if it beat or matched its peak in the year I’m discussing. Well, guess what: I’m removing this rule; because I don’t think I can think of a single song that finished in the YE top 20 as a repeat from the previous year that finished lower and still beat or matched its peak from the previous year, which basically defeats the point of my top 20 repeat rule to begin with. So, my rules that are set in stone for now are that the songs had to debut on the YE Hot 100 list for 2011 to qualify. However, if a repeat from the previous year was higher this year than the last one on the YE, it’s also eligible. And if the repeat finished in the YE top 20, it’s eligible regardless of whether it finished higher or lower compared to last year. With that said, if you’re curious to see how the best list reduxes for 2014 and 2016 would change under this new criteria:

Have fun!!

2016:

Absolutely nothing again lol

2014:

Absolutely nothing again lol[2]

So, why don’t we prep ourselves up for the list, finally, by looking at my original best list?

HMs:

Avril Lavigne - What The Hell

Chris Brown - Yeah 3x

Britney Spears - I Wanna Go

Christina Perri - Jar Of Hearts

Bad Meets Evil f/Bruno Mars - Lighters

Lady Gaga - The Edge Of Glory

Taylor Swift - Back To December

10. Diddy - Dirty Money f/Skylar Grey - Coming Home

9. David Guetta f/Usher - Without You

8. Katy Perry - Firework

7. Britney Spears - Till The World Ends

6. Jennifer Lopez f/Pitbull - On The Floor

5. Hot Chelle Rae - Tonight Tonight

4. Kesha - We R Who We R

3. Pitbull f/Ne-Yo, Afrojack, & Nayer - Give Me Everything

2. Gym Class Heroes f/Adam Levine - Stereo Hearts

1. Zac Brown Band - Colder Weather

Quite a few notable changes here that I can already see haha, 2 of these songs were actually very close to my worst list this time around! So let’s FINALLY reexamine the best of the best, starting with our honorable mentions...

HM #1: Chris Brown - Yeah 3x (YE: #49, PEAK: #15)

Yes, the drop is obviously just a blatant clone of “I’m Not Alone” by Calvin Harris and no, “Yeah 3x” isn’t better than “I’m Not Alone”, but I’ve always thought “Yeah 3x” was a great song that went harder than it had any right to. I really like Chris Brown’s vocals here, as lathered in autotune they are, I think he has a decent command of presence here for being basically an Usher-lite. Essentially, this is just 2011’s “I’m Good (Blue)”/“I Don’t Wanna Wait” by David Guetta, in that I think all these songs are pretty fun club jams wth obvious samples that are a bit lazily written admittedly, but not so much so that I consider it too much a fault and are just brainless enough to the point where I can have fun to them. Yeah, while I admit that I don’t quite love this to the extent I used to, I can’t deny that I still think this is a really fun song.

HM #2: Kesha - Blow (YE: #33, PEAK: #7)

Guys, I think this place about to blo-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-ow. Ok all jokes aside, “Blow” is such a banger. Kesha has such a commanding presence here. She makes it clear that ...well, pardon the reference, but the party don’t start till she walks in. “Blow” is the kind of song where this isn’t the club you go to to get tipsy, this is one where you go to get dangerous (and/or maybe dance lol). Coupled with the huge-sounding chorus and you get a song that, well, saying it slaps would be a disservice. The only minor issue I have with it is that the constant in-your-face bombast of the whole song can get a bit tiresome with repeated listens, but that doesn’t stop this from being a kickass track. Not Kesha’s best hit this year - we’ll get to that - but this is still such a fun song.

HM #3: Kanye West f/Rihanna - All of the Lights (YE: #59, PEAK: #18)

Oh god, I really hoped I would never have to put this guy on any more of my best lists. But again, me loving “All Of The Lights” doesn’t mean I condone in any way his bullshit behavior and stuff he’s done and said for the past few years - trust me, I’ll have words for this man at the end of the year - but trying to associate “All Of The Lights” with any of that baggage isn’t fair to the song or, quite frankly, anyone who worked on this (yes, even Kanye). This is probably the best song I’ve heard from Kanye on production alone, where the composition is superb, basically impeccable, the cello (or maybe is that a French horn?) sounds incredible, and almost triumphant and the percussion is so energetic and explosive. And while Kanye and Rihanna might be the only two artists credited on this, make no mistake, this song contains a star-studded array of artists, including, but not limited to, John Legend, Fergie, Kid Cudi, Drake, Alicia Keys, and even fucking Elton John! And those are only the people contributing vocals. Lyrically, this song delves into the life of a troubled family and apparently...he’s using it as both a literal story and a metaphor for his struggles of being in the public eye?? That’s honestly...beautiful imagery, definitely for someone who doesn’t think he’s antisemitic because he fucked a Jewish bitch. Kanye, please just ditch whatever you did on Vultures 1 and go back to this...now that’s a legacy I’d probably be more willing to defend compared to how I’m gonna thoroughly eviscerate you for Vultures 1 at the end of the year 👀👀. Yeah, excellent song, maybe it should be even higher here, but yeah, Kanye’s actions the last few years have made even me less willing to like his songs.

HM #4: Katy Perry - Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.) (YE: #14, PEAK: #1)

I’m still a bit shocked at how much I genuinely loved this song when I re-listened to the YE list for 2011. Don’t get me wrong, I always liked it, but I didn’t think it was even close to great before. But everything just clicked once that tight groove soon became too irresistible to not get sweat in along with the fun. This is a song where Katy Perry throws a party, then passes out and wakes up the next morning unaware of where she is or what had just occurred the night before and she spends the rest of the song desperately trying to connect the dots. And the way Katy is realizing what happened in this song, I’m pretty sure they did EVERYTHING at this party, they went streaking in the park, had a menage a trois, maxed out their credit cards, skinny-dipped in the dark, got kicked out of the bar, danced on tabletops, hit the boulevard after getting kicked out of the bar, and maybe even kissed but she forgot. As she says, it’s a blacked-out blur but she’s pretty sure it ruled. Let me tell you, I’m both relieved and disappointed I wasn’t at this party. And I can’t help but love the irony of how even after Katy realizing all the shit that happened and how she’s screwed, she still ends the post-chorus by saying “this Friday night, do it all again”. And that’s not to mention the glorious saxophone solo courtesy of Lenny Pickett, not the last sax solo we’ll be seeing on this list - stay tuned. But yeah, absolutely incredible song and a ton of fun!

HM #5: Edward Maya f/Vika Jiguina - Stereo Love (YE: #54, PEAK: #16)

Yet another song that while I always liked, struggled with really loving. But damn, this was such an incredible little song. A slice of Romanian Popcorn that was pretty huge in 2011 and it works so well, Vika Jiguina’s vocals are almost hypnotic in how sensual they are and then the production, which has a strange “ethereal-beauty” sort of texture in how subdued of a dance jam it is thanks to Edward Maya’s production work. This is music for when you two are the only people left in the club and your feelings of attraction just become too strong to ignore. Love this, very underrated little song, check it out if you haven’t already!

HM #6: Cobra Starship f/Sabi - You Make Me Feel... (YE: #48, PEAK: #7)

I can’t remember where, but I saw someone on YouTube describe Cobra Starship as “the good 3OH!3” in terms of the frat duos of the early 2010s. And it’s hard to disagree! Because while 3OH!3 were obnoxious to excruciating degrees, Cobra Starship aren’t trying to convey how their first kiss felt in gross detail or anything, they are just conveying the feeling of being in love on this song. And “You Make Me Feel…” just makes me feel really happy in how lovestruck it feels. Gabe Saporta and Sabi have incredible chemistry and they make this such a fun song. Yeah, this song is excellent, if you don’t at least slightly grin when the chorus hits, get up off your high horse old man.

HM #7: LMFAO f/Lauren Bennett and GoonRock - Party Rock Anthem (YE: #2, PEAK: #1)

This song is way better constructed than it has any right to be; it’s like every bit of the club boom all balled up into one masterfully composed song that weirdly sounds like a modern classic in a way; it’s obviously a relic of the club boom, but LMFAO take the club boom sounds and somehow manage to rise above most of the rest of the competition to make arguably the single most iconic song of this era. Yeah, absolute banger of a song, there is a reason that this song is actually remembered in the public conscience today and not “Sexy & I Know It”.

Other than that, not much else to say other than this might be the funniest discography of all time:

They made an album, apologized for making said album, then left the world forever (thank you random Pulse member for this funny ass comment lol). If you think this song is everything wrong with pop music like, you cranky old men on RYM, or whatever think, stop. Hatin’ is bad.

HM #8: Kesha - We R Who We R (YE: #30, PEAK: #1)

Yes, both of Kesha’s hits this year are making my honorable mentions. And while I do really like “Blow”, I’ve always loved “We R Who We R” even more, mainly thanks to the production being more melodic, where Kesha right from the very start makes it clear that she means business. Where Kesha’s goofy, fun delivery makes you just wanna have fun. This is the song for the outcasts that weren’t invited to that cool party but still wanna party. Such a fun song, the only reason this wasn’t on the list proper again like it was last time was that I ran out of space.

HM #9: Taylor Swift - Back to December (YE: #74, PEAK: #6)

I’ve always really liked “Back To December”, to the point where it was on my original best list in the honorable mentions too, but I admittedly struggled to love it for a long time, mainly because I found the backing vocals distracting at first, but i think it may have been the rerecording of this song that made me finally swing around to fully loving it. I do think the rerecording does work better, since Taylor’s more mature vocals fit the more retrospective lyrics better, but I do now think this is excellent in its own right. The production is beautiful, the strings are near immaculately played and succeed in intensifying the despair in this song. This takes us to the lyrics, where Taylor is reflecting on a failed relationship that ended in December, and she wishes she could make things right by going “back to December” and taking back her words even though she realizes that she can’t do that. She even acknowledges that this might all be wishful thinking and she says that she  is swallowing her pride and that she’s sorry for that night, but if she is no longer welcome into this guy’s life, she understands. I still wouldn’t put this among my absolute favorites from Taylor when “Cruel Summer”, “All Too Well”, “Style”, or even “Out Of The Woods (Taylor’s Version)” exist, but this is still incredible. Patiently waiting for this to become a Christmas staple now because of the title, I’m serious...if y’all can do that for “Last Christmas” surely this isn’t a crazy idea, right?

HM #10: Diddy - Dirty Money f/ Skylar Grey - Coming Home (YE: #38, PEAK: #11)

Believe it or not, this was actually the final cut from the list. Yeah, I mainly love this on the strength of Skylar Grey’s hook, where she is channeling her inner Ellie Goulding with her more soft spoken vocals slotting in nicely with this very strong production without it overpowering her like it did on “I Need A Doctor”. Yeah, the hook is really the biggest reason this made the list at all, but now for a hook as near flawless as this one’s is, why is it not on the list proper like it was last time? Well, honestly without that hook, it feels very dated to the early 2010s rap scene, where it felt like everyone was trying to emulate the Recovery era of Eminem. And Diddy’s flow on this is...shaky to put it mildly, it’s clear he’s trying to come off as an inspirational figure, but his efforts to do that here feel forced. Skylar Grey’s hook is still absolutely fantastic though, so it’s still an excellent song.

That’s a VERY strong start, now onto the top 10 proper!

10...Ah, remember when David Guetta didn’t overuse samples in his music? Can we just go back to that?...

10. Diddy - Dirty Money f/Skylar Grey - Coming Home David Guetta f/Usher - Without You (YE: #73, PEAK: #4)

Yeah, this might be on my list again almost purely because of Usher, who is absolutely pushing his performance to the max here in a way he wouldn’t replicate until “Climax” in 2012, but I don’t wanna discount David Guetta’s production here either, the production is standard EDM, sure, but the strings swell up quite nicely and the drop is inserted so seamlessly and it sounds incredibly clean, in other words, it’s the type of melodic EDM that hits every one of my weak spots, but I do think this is a pretty excellent song all the same.

9...2011’s pop music can be comfortably described as the club boom past its apex but still a fun, nonstop rager. But another notable mini-trend that doesn’t get enough recognition by this overgenerealization was that this year saw a comeback for the saxophone to excellent results!! We saw one track that used the sax already in “Last Friday Night”, now how about we take a look at the best sax hit of the year?...

9. David Guetta f/Usher - Without You Lady Gaga - The Edge of Glory (YE: #39, PEAK: #3)

This is probably my favorite Lady Gaga song that I’ve heard. It’s such an incredible song that makes you wanna run wild and free into the night yelling the song with your friends, thanks to the synth-driven groove that steadily builds up some swell, letting you know of the excitement of a night you are in for, and then the chorus hits and the synth-driven groove transforms into a guitar-driven groove and you immediately wanna run into the night with your friends like no one else is around to watch you guys. And then the saxophone solo comes in and it’s like it’s calling for one last dance before it’s closing time for the dancefloor. It’s like I can perfectly map every second of this song to an instance of a high school homecoming dance, or at least what was my dream one haha, where after that sax solo, when the guitar-driven grove kicks in, that’s when it’s time to exit the dancefloor and go on crazy adventures into the night with your partner. Absolutely incredible song, part of me thinks I might have this too low on this list to be honest.

8...I said in my original list that this was the 2nd song I remember hearing and loving, which is absolutely true! (idk I literally have nothing else to put here)...

8. Katy Perry - Firework (YE: #3, PEAK: #1)

Yeah, this and Taio Cruz’s “Dynamite” were my two earliest songs I heard. This was one of my favorite songs as a kid and I still have a huge soft spot for it, even if I don’t quite have the undying love for it that I did when I was 6. Admittedly, the lyrics are pretty cliche self-empowerment shit, but Katy Perry’s towering vocals make it rise above most of the rest of the competition. Not to mention, production-wise, this song is also excellent. The strings sound amazing here and they build up genuine swell in the prechorus and the synths sound quite good too. Yeah, this is an amazing fireworks show of a song, love it!

7...In 2011, there wasn’t really that much rock music charting, I mean what’s the most “rock” hit of 2011? “Pumped Up Kicks”? “Moves Like Jagger”? Well, it looks like we all forgot about this gem!...

7. Britney Spears - Till The World Ends Avril Lavigne - What the Hell (YE: #62, PEAK: #11)

If my 2000s lists were any indication, I really like Avril Lavigne’s music generally from what I’ve heard. And “What The Hell” is no exception, it’s just tons of fun, where Avril is simply going “fuck it, it’s fine” mode like Olivia Rodrigo did in “bad idea right?” and is just going to have the craziest, most fun time of her life. She’s basically playing into her pop punk side of being a skater girl and then dropping gummy synths and bubblegum on top of it, and it results in an absolute banger of a track as a result. Excellent stuff!! ALL MY LIFE I’VE BEEN GOOD! BUT NOW! OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH I’M THINKING WHAT THE HELL! Seriously if you don’t scream that chorus joyously, live a little, old man.

6...So back in the intro, I said 2011 “[...]was also a year where pop stars like Katy Perry, Kesha, Lady Gaga, and Rihanna were duking it out to see who’s the main pop girl.”, I think Britney Spears could make a strong case for herself too!...

6. Jennifer Lopez f/Pitbull - On The Floor Britney Spears - I Wanna Go (YE: #46, PEAK: #7)

“I Wanna Go” may not be my favorite Britney hit of this year (spoilers), but “I Wanna Go” is amazing nonetheless. Britney makes good use of her slightly limited range and submerges herself in autotune while still keeping herself as a strong, powerful presence as the chorus devolves into a sugar rush of a guitar and synth-driven groove. And the whistling...you see, normally I’d criticize it but in this song I think it works rather well, because this song isn’t being smug, the whistling just acts as another catchiness factor. Fun song!

5...We’re not quite done with Britney bitch yet!...

5. Hot Chelle Rae - Tonight Tonight Britney Spears - Till the World Ends (YE: #27, PEAK: #3)

“Till The World Ends” might not have the same groove that “I Wanna Go” has, but I love this more because it’s just danceable and melodic enough to make you feel like you’re on top of the world, which nicely fits the “dancing till the world ends” sentiment. And then the post-chorus hits and then we get an even better version of the groove we got in “I Wanna Go”!! All the effects piled onto Britney’s voice, once again, seem to only intensify her fun presence. Yeah, I love this song!!

4...So given that Bruno Mars appeared on my worst list redux twice and very nearly actually had a third appearance, I thought going into this song when relistening to the YE list for 2011 that I would detest this song. But then I relistened and my confusion for the amount of hate this song receives all returned...

4. Kesha - We R Who We R Bruno Mars - Just The Way You Are (YE: #15, PEAK: #1)

I seriously don’t get why people hate this song unless it’s from overplay. But even then, if you hate it for overplay, relisten to this song with fresh ears. The only minor criticism I have about this song is that the gong sound that persists throughout the song in the background can get a bit tiresome. Bruno Mars just sounds so lovestruck here and you can tell he really loves his girl. Compare this to say, “What Makes You Beautiful” by One Direction, a song I also genuinely adore, the lyrics can admittedly at points feel condescending with the way One Direction are preying on their fangirls’ insecurities to make them swoon. “Just The Way You Are” doesn’t do that, it instead handpicks specific aspects about the girl that she might feel insecure about, and explains why she shouldn’t feel insecure about them. “What Makes You Beautiful” just says “Why are you insecure?” without acknowledging specific aspects that the girl(s) might be insecure about. Bruno, meanwhile, acknowledges, for example, that his girl might hate the way she laughs, but he says he thinks it’s so sexy. Yeah, call this cheesy or corny all you want, but this is genuinely a sweet song. I’ll still stick up for it.

3...Let’s just quote my original intro for this song here: “Most of the club boom came and went over the past decade, with only a select few songs managing to still receive decent recurrent airplay. This song is one of them. It ended up becoming one of the biggest songs of the decade and it’s pretty much what I’d call ‘2011 in a nutshell’”...

3. Pitbull f/Ne-Yo, Afrojack, & Nayer - Give Me Everything (YE: #5, PEAK: #1)

Yes, Pitbull isn’t a great lyricist (that locked up like Lindsey Lohan line and that “take a picture with me and a Kodak” lyric that opens the song are um...let’s call it not the strongest lyrics I’ve ever heard lol) and Nayer honestly kinda got the “Lana Del Rey on Taylor Swift song” treatment. But “Give Me Everything” is still a fantastic song that like “Party Rock Anthem”, feels quintessentially 2011, bottling up all the partying trends of the pop music year into one song and then rising above much of the rest of the competition to not sound dated yet also like a relic of the club boom. Couple that with a very strong hook from Ne-Yo and you get a track that goes so hard. Fantastic song!!

2...This song was my original #1 pick, mainly because back in 2021 I didn’t really factor in personal significance in my list there. It’s hard to disagree though if you call this the best hit song of 2011!...

2. Gym Class Heroes f/Adam Levine - Stereo Hearts Zac Brown Band - Colder Weather (YE: #99, PEAK: #29)

There’s a reason this is widely hailed as a modern country classic, and honestly to say that it’s deserving of that title is underselling how fantastic this song is. The song takes the listener on a journey of a man who leaves his family behind in Colorado and is now stuck in colder weather trying to get back to them. And the arrangement is genuinely some of the best I’ve heard in any song, country or otherwise. The strings are hauntingly beautiful and the piano at the end just sits there all alone in devastating silence with Zac Brown’s more restrained delivery just amplifying every bit of atmosphere in this song. Couple that with Zac Brown’s perfect warm vocal timbre in his belting, and you get one of the best songs I’ve ever heard. It left me genuinely speechless the first time I heard it in 2021 to the point where it originally topped this list. It could’ve very easily topped this list again, but it didn’t. So what’s better? And ooh boy, I’m gonna have to explain this one...

1...2011 was a year that was so stacked that it’s making me do something I have literally never done before, and that is that I made TWO songs my #1 on the best list. Now to examine why...

1 (TIE). Zac Brown Band - Colder Weather Hot Chelle Rae - Tonight Tonight + Gym Class Heroes f/Adam Levine - Stereo Hearts (YE: #32 + #36, PEAK: #7 + #4)

Okay, I’ve said in previous lists that personal significance is a huge overriding factor when I evaluate a song. But what happens when I have two personally significant songs? Normally, I’d give the favor to the one that holds more personal significance for me. But here’s the thing: imagine someone holds you at gunpoint and then tells you “I’ll spare your life if you let me kill either your best friend for many years OR your father who you love very much as well.”. How would you respond? Probably with “Fuck you, don’t do that, take me instead!” So if these you songs tying for my #1 is illegal or whatever in the online music reviewing community, then brutally murder me instead. Not even joking. I don’t think I could choose between these two songs if my limbs were getting torn off at the stake. But now let’s dive into the individual songs, starting with what I assume is the less embarrassing one.

1a. Gym Class Heroes f/Adam Levine - Stereo Hearts (YE: #36, PEAK: #4)

Granted, the reason I hold this at such a high personal significance is kinda embarrassing - this was one of the very first songs my dad showed to me as a little kid and now whenever I hear Adam Levine’s chorus and the bridge, I genuinely choke up a bit because I’m reminded of how much I love my dad because I am just that close to him. Couple that with Adam Levine’s best vocal performance of the 2010s and Gym Class Heroes’ sharply written, if corny, songwriting, and you get a genuine diamond in the rough for me. Also helps that Travie McCoy’s delivery is just so charming in its sincerity. Now onto “Tonight Tonight”...

1b. Hot Chelle Rae - Tonight Tonight (YE: #32, PEAK: #7)

Back in 2021 I considered this a huge guilty pleasure for me, in fact, my guiltiest pleasure. I knew exactly why people hated this song and why it appeared on like 5975960607607860785975705076706060607505606770567654564321234565434567656789878987890987898765 worst of 2011 lists, but I was just instantly drawn in by its ridiculously catchy, if pretty basic, melody line and Nash Overstreet’s insanely fun delivery to the point where even the “EVEN THE WHITE KIDS” line didn’t bother me at all and it has never really bothered me. But then, I showed this song one day to my best friend and she became absolutely OBSESSED. Like, to a level I don’t think words can properly comprehend. The song might as well have been our coke. It became the song that we would literally blast on random occasions. And now I always think of the undying bond that me and my best friend have due to that song. I guess if I wanted to really reach to make a pretentious argument, I’d call it "the exemplification of how music can connect us with other people" or whatever. But more than anything, the memories of me and my friend blasting that song every chance we could are why I no longer and will never again consider this song a “guilty pleasure”. Guilty pleasures are meant for you to be ashamed of liking or loving, like you don’t really like the song but there is something about it that you find catchy enough to bop to when the “homies” aren’t around. There was something real when my best friend and I blasted this song back in 2021. Nothing guilty about this anymore. And by the way, if you hate this, you’re not invited to the party on the rooftop of the world tonight (which I’m pretty sure is the stratosphere which would mean you’d probably die if you were at that party lol).

And with that, fuck it, “Stereo Hearts” by Gym Class Heroes featuring Adam Levine and “Tonight Tonight” by Hot Chelle Rae, collectively the best hit song of 2011. Call it treason all you want, I’m not changing my stance.

So that’s another list redux down! I can’t promise my next article will be another list redux, but if it is, it’ll be the worst list for 2020. If it isn’t, it’ll be a special surprise article!  Other than that, if you’ve got predictions for how my worst list redux for 2020 might go or your own lists of the top 10 best hit songs of 2011, feel free to comment them below! And as always, Spotify playlist is below the article. Until then, remember to keep it Fire!

  1. This list was harder to put together than I thought it would be. So many great tracks here! Also, re “Tonight Tonight,” I don’t quite love it enough to put it on my list, but I agree with you that it’s a fun song that’s overhated. If we were talking about “I Like It Like That” (my favorite song from them), that song would absolutely have made my list. Also, I enjoyed your insight on guilty pleasures needing to pass the “homie” test before they can be called such lol.

H.M. Taylor Swift - “Back to December”
There are a lot of great songs here but I tried to narrow it down to just one honorable mention, considering my comments are so long that it always makes me divide it into two or three comments anyway lol. I love both versions of this and it’s such a gorgeous ballad. In an immaculate discography like Taylor’s, I can’t say this is an all-time favorite, but it’s certainly a very memorable standout track. Also, I’d be totally down for this becoming getting popular around the holidays!

    10. Kesha - “We R Who We R”
This didn’t always used to be one of my favorite Kesha songs, but it’s grown on me in the last few years. While lyrically it may not be the best, it’s a fun party jam to just turn your brain off to.

    9. LMFAO - “Party Rock Anthem”
I will admit this has slightly worn on me due to massive overplay by my local station in recent years, but it is still a jam and I agree with you it sounds kinda weirdly like a modern classic. The lyrics aren’t exactly great, but the beat and their presence on it is enough to still make this really great.

    8. Lady Gaga - “Born This Way”
Such an empowering jam! It’s one of my favorite tracks from her that I feel still holds up quite well today, and vocally she sounds awesome here.

    7. Kesha - “Blow”
Not my favorite Ke$ha song (that honor would go to “Stephen,” as the cute-flirty vibe she brings to that song is unmatched lol) but it’s definitely up there. She brings a lot of energy to this song, and the production sounds amazing!

    6. Cobra Starship feat. Sabi - “You Make Me Feel”
Maybe hot take, but I really don’t like “Good Girls Go Bad.” Their vocals there just sound really terrible and amateurish, but this is a massive upgrade in quality. I agree with you that this has a vibe of sweetness and innocence to it, and I like the chemistry both artists have. The upbeat, dancey production also elevates this for me.

    5. Edward Maya feat. Vika Jigulina - “Stereo Love”
Weirdly, this probably would have been towards the edge of making my top 10 a few months ago, but recently, similarly to you, this really clicked with me. The production is a ton of fun, and I think both artists have really great chemistry with each other.

  2. 4. Rihanna feat. Drake - “What’s My Name?”
This has become one of my favorite Rihanna songs in recent years, I think she sounds awesome here and the beat is also fire. Drake’s part is admittedly my least favorite part of the song, but his verse still pretty good!

    3. Avril Lavigne - “What the Hell”
One of my all time favorites from Avril, only surpassed by “Complicated” and “Break of a Heartache” (the latter of which I feel is super underrated). The production is really fun here, but what really makes this for me is the energy Avril brings to it. She sounds like she’s having so much fun here, and I’ve always found her brattiness to be kinda cute lol.

    2. Bruno Mars - “Just the Way You Are”
For whatever reason, I was expecting this to be like in the top 10 or something in the 2010s rankdown on Pulse, so you can imagine my shock when it didn’t even make the top half lol. This is such an adorable song that I have so much nostalgia over. Bruno perfectly captures the sugary sweet feeling that you get when you’re in love here, and the production is total ear candy imo. It’s not the reason I have nostalgia over it, but I have fond memories of some friends and I singing this at the top of our lungs when my parents were driving us to camp one time :)

    1. Gym Class Heroes feat. Adam Levine - “Stereo Hearts”
Twins! (or at least, half-twins since yours was a tie lol) This is another one I have a ton of nostalgia over and just reminds me of those middle school days, which I’ll admit was probably my least favorite time of my school days (I much preferred elementary and high school), but weirdly, this song just feels so nostalgic and always puts me in a good mood whenever hearing it. Gym Class Heroes and Adam Levine sound really good here and have great chemistry. I remember being surprised by how much I liked this during my first listen at the time, considering I didn’t think Patrick Stump had good chemistry with them at all on “Cupid’s Chokehold” (and while I don’t hate that song as much as others, I’ve liked it less over time). Also, that’s really sweet about your dad :)
