Friday's Chill Pick - 10/22/21 - with a twist
Hey guys, it's Fire's Flaming Hot Takes here with another Friday's Chill Pick! This week's chill pick is gonna function a bit different compared to usual. Instead of highlighting a song I really enjoy, I'm gonna highlight...well this song. So with that, what's this week's Chill Pick?
Lil Dicky - Earth

Ah, Lil Dicky. Familiar to anybody? Yeah, he's that "comedy" rapper who in 2018 created "Freaky Friday" with Chris Brown which is comfortably among the worst hits of the past decade. And then just a short year later, he drops an environmental awareness song that was absolutely panned by both critics and the general public alike. So much, in fact, that it's actually the lowest rated single in RateYourMusic history. I wouldn't normally cover a song like this in this segment, but I just had to make an exception for this song, because this is absolutely one of the strangest songs I have heard in my entire life. Like...this is both good and bad at the same time, it's both funny and unfunny at the same time, and its attempt at being a charity song for this cause is both respectable and laughable at the same time. It's one of the most perplexing songs I've ever heard. But okay, this is an environmental charity single where all the proceedings would go to the Leonardo DiCaprio foundation, so what did our "comedy" rapper do? Well, he got the biggest stars together to play Earth's wildest creatures while making sex jokes. And this already springs up one thought...who in the world is this song for? Like, it can't be for kids because of all the sex jokes, yet somehow it's also too childish to target teenagers? And, who would listen to this song without the video? Like, just the song by itself? Why would you want to just listen to over 50 artists say "hey, I'm [insert animal here], and I [insert sex joke here]!" without the video to give you something legitimately entertaining? And if the entire song is supposed to be a joke, uh that kinda undercuts your central message of being environmentally friendly Lil Dicky! So what's the whole purpose of this song? Now, at least there's a few aspects that are redeeming about this song, I actually quite like the production, although that might just be my nostalgia for 2016 tropical mixes, because this song's production sounds like it came straight from 2016. But that's all I can give this song credit for, because the rest of this song is just absolutely confusing. The hook is super lazy, it's just Lil Dicky trying to autotune-croon the lyrics "we love the earth, it is our planet", and he doesn't sound like he cares about the Earth in this section at all, he sounds like he's being sarcastic here, I'm not even joking! So if Lil Dicky's not taking this seriously, why should I? And then we got Lil Dicky's rap verse, which contain cum and dick jokes that have absolutely nothing to do with the song at all, and then we got the line "we forgive you, Germany"...legitimately, WHAT WAS HE THINKING WITH THIS LINE!? It's telling that the funniest part of the song is Kevin Hart describing himself as Kanye West, because somehow Kanye West of all people had enough dignity to not do this. This song is such an absolute unfunny failure in every way possible that, in a way, it somehow becomes funny. Like, it's such a failure of a song I have to laugh at this song. Look, this song has good intentions, and I respect that, but then the end result is just one of the biggest musical enigmas I have ever heard, like, I'm not even so certain whether I like or hate this song! As for my final verdict...6/10, only because it's too bad to be good yet too good to be bad, so I'm just giving this an OK rating and moving on. And no way in hell I'm recommending this, I promise next week's Chill Pick will be legitimately normal.
I also both love and hate this song lol. It's a fun idea, but I agree with you the sex jokes weren't really funny and some jokes were distastefully crude (the "we forgive you Germany" one in particular).
